A medical assistant apprenticeship makes training part of a job. You apply to an employer, learn clinical skills while earning pay, and accept the working conditions attached to the offer. That can change the cost of entering healthcare, especially if unpaid training would force you to leave another job.
Our five editorial picks compare the whole employment agreement: paid learning, tuition responsibility, practical preparation, and service after training. The first position goes to the clearest documented training-to-apprenticeship sequence. Later positions reflect different regional fits, not a prediction of hiring or wages. Program descriptions were checked September 17, 2026; cohort applications open and close separately.

Program Length
12 Weeks of Initial Training, Then 2,000 Apprenticeship Hours

An Explicit Training-to-Apprenticeship Sequence
Dartmouth begins with 12 weeks of paid classroom instruction and skills training. You then take the NHA CCMA examination and enter full-time clinic work while completing a 2,000-hour registered apprenticeship. That sequence makes it easier to understand when classroom learning ends and the longer employment commitment continues.
There is no direct participant tuition charge. The offer also includes a required additional year as a Dartmouth Health MA after the apprenticeship. Its current program page directs applicants toward December recruitment for spring 2027, so plan around the next cohort rather than treating the program description as an open vacancy.
A Good Fit For
You can commit to a Dartmouth clinic location through training, apprenticeship, and the additional service year.
Plan Around
A 12-week class is the beginning of a longer employment commitment.
How You’ll Attend
Paid classroom and skills training leads into full-time clinic employment and a 2,000-hour registered apprenticeship. Participants also agree to at least one additional year as a Dartmouth Health medical assistant. See Dartmouth Health Career Institute’s Attendance Requirements.
Cost Basis: Employer terms apply. Review the employment and training agreement before accepting. Check the Published Cost Details.
#2 Madison, WI Paid Work and Clinical Training
UW Health
Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program
Why We Ranked It #2
UW Health clearly identifies paid weekly training hours and a two-year post-graduation work agreement.

CCMA Exam Preparation
Program Length
10-Month Academic Program

No Tuition Cost for Accepted Current Employees
Paid Learning Across an Academic Program
UW Health's 10-month academic program combines classes and clinical application and prepares apprentices for the CCMA exam. Both current employees and external applicants can be considered. Accepted participants are paid for 40 hours a week during training, giving you a concrete work-week assumption for planning.
The current-employee route explicitly states there is no tuition cost. External applicants become employees if accepted and should review their own offer's financial terms. The page says applications are closed while future cohorts are planned. Use the program as a route to monitor, not an assurance of an immediate start.
A Good Fit For
You want an employer-based academic calendar and can work within UW Health after graduation.
Plan Around
The two-year work agreement and cohort recruitment timing both affect your options.
How You’ll Attend
The program pays for 40 hours per week during training and combines classes with clinical work. Graduates accept a two-year work agreement with UW Health. See UW Health’s Attendance Requirements.
Cost Basis: Employer terms apply. Review the employment and training agreement before accepting. Check the Published Cost Details.

A College and Employer Share the Training
The CoxHealth and Ozarks Technical Community College program splits training between class or lab instruction and clinical rotations. CoxHealth covers tuition and pays for full-time work hours during the approximately 16-week sequence. That can suit someone ready to make a concentrated change into clinical work.
The employer describes an agreed work commitment of approximately 2.5 years. Graduates have the opportunity to apply for a full-time certified MA role, which is more precise than a guarantee that a particular clinic job will be yours. Read the current employment agreement and the next cohort announcement together.
A Good Fit For
You can attend the college-and-clinic schedule in the Springfield area.
Plan Around
A short training period comes with a substantially longer work commitment.
How You’ll Attend
Class and lab work at Ozarks Technical Community College is paired with CoxHealth clinical rotations. The employer describes approximately 2.5 years of agreed work commitment. See CoxHealth’s Attendance Requirements.

Endeavor publishes the weekly paid-learning limit and an 18-month commitment after its 16-week program.
Award / Training Route
Medical Assistant Apprenticeship
Program Length
16 Weeks
Outpatient Training With a Defined Service Period
Endeavor's program serves current team members and selected external candidates. Classroom instruction and supervised outpatient training provide up to 40 hours per week of paid learning. Graduates transition into an MA role within the health system and agree to 18 months of employment.
Its published fall 2026 deadline was September 7, before this review date. The useful next step is to follow subsequent recruitment rather than submit on the assumption that the fall class is still accepting people. Ask which outpatient locations could become your training and work sites, since the commute matters for both stages.
A Good Fit For
You want an outpatient route in the Chicagoland area and can accept the assigned employer placement.
Plan Around
The posted fall 2026 application deadline has passed; follow the next recruitment notice.
How You’ll Attend
Classroom instruction and supervised outpatient training provide up to 40 paid learning hours per week. Graduates transition into an Endeavor Health MA role with an 18-month commitment. See Endeavor Health’s Attendance Requirements.

Community-Clinic Experience Through Paid Training
CHAS describes an earn-while-you-learn route with formal education and on-the-job training. Its MA apprenticeship includes 2,000 training hours, and the organization says it covers program costs and education materials. That gives you a practical alternative to paying for a college program before seeking your first healthcare job.
Apply through CHAS's career process and review the exact clinic, schedule, credential preparation, and employment conditions in the offer. Washington's medical-assistant credential rules deserve a separate check. A sponsor's use of the abbreviation CMA should not be treated as proof of a particular certifying organization's exam route.
A Good Fit For
You want mentored experience in community healthcare and can work at an available CHAS clinic.
Plan Around
Confirm the specific state credential and certification examination attached to your offer.
How You’ll Attend
CHAS combines formal education with paid work experience and covers education costs, including materials. Apply through the employer rather than through a college admission process. See CHAS Health’s Attendance Requirements.
Cost Basis: Employer terms apply. Review the employment and training agreement before accepting. Check the Published Cost Details.
How We Compare a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship
Our order emphasizes a documented connection between paid instruction, patient-facing training, certification preparation, and the employment commitment. Dartmouth's staged registered-apprenticeship model is especially explicit. UW Health supplies a clear academic calendar and paid weekly hours. CoxHealth and Endeavor offer concentrated programs with stated service periods. CHAS offers a workplace-hours model in community clinics.
These are reviewed employer pathways, not every medical assistant apprenticeship in the country. We do not use college graduation rates to score employers, and we don't rank on an invented average apprentice wage. The review methodology explains our evidence-first approach. DOL's registered apprenticeship definition also helps distinguish a registered program from a training role that an employer calls an apprenticeship.
Read the Work Commitment Before You Accept
Request the agreement before committing to a training date. Identify when required service begins, whether it follows classroom training or apprenticeship completion, and what happens if you resign, fail an examination, change clinics, or need leave. A no-tuition offer can still include repayment obligations under its contract.
Compare the offer with your likely life over the full service period. Housing, transportation, childcare, and a possible move can matter as much as the tuition bill. Keep the signed version of the agreement and the benefits summary you receive at hiring.
Compare Apprenticeships With College Medical Assistant Programs
An apprenticeship ties your first training experience to an employer. A college program gives you a separate school admission process and may award credit that supports a later degree. Neither label answers every question about certification or future transfer.
The employer needs to see that you can show up reliably, communicate with patients, learn procedures, and protect confidential information. Use concrete examples from customer service, caregiving, school labs, or other work. Be ready to explain how you'll manage the stated class and clinic schedule.
Apply to an identified opening and location. A general program page is background, not an application receipt. Save the posting, complete the required screening, and ask which milestones control progression from trainee to the next role. If your longer-term goal is nursing, compare medical assistant and LPN career paths first.
Questions About These Medical Assistant Programs
Are Medical Assistant Apprenticeships Paid?
The five employer routes reviewed here describe paid learning or paid workplace training. Check your offer for the wage, paid hours, benefits start date, and whether time spent studying outside class is paid.
Does Free Tuition Mean There Is No Work Commitment?
No. Several sponsors pair covered training with service after graduation. The timing and length differ, so read the individual agreement rather than comparing tuition alone.
Can I Apply Without Already Working for the Employer?
UW Health and Endeavor describe routes for external applicants as well as current employees. Eligibility and available locations still depend on the specific cohort and hiring process.
Is a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship the Same as an Externship?
An apprenticeship is an employment-based training route. An externship is a supervised placement within a program and does not by itself establish paid employment or an apprenticeship credential.
Will the Apprenticeship Qualify Me to Work in Another State?
Check the new state's medical-assistant requirements and the exact certification you earn. Employer training, national certification, and a state credential are separate issues; portability should be confirmed before a move.
